Statement on Sexual Identity and Full Participation in the Church
As human beings, our primary identity is as God’s image-bearers and God’s beloved children. Assurance of this identity pervades all of scripture, the teachings of the Christian church universal, and our Reformed creeds and confessions. This identity is assured whether we are straight or gay, whether we are cis or trans, as well as whether we are single or married.
The church is a community of believers belonging to Christ. Within this community, there are disagreements about human sexuality and faithful discipleship. And yet we agree that we are called to honor God with our sexuality and that our belonging to Christ and to one another is greater than our disagreements. The community of believers is stronger when those who disagree commit to love one another and to participate together in Christ’s ministry in the world.
In baptism, God calls us all to faithful discipleship. We are all called to know God, to love God, and to serve God. This is true whether we are straight or gay, whether we are cis or trans, as well as whether we are single or married. Therefore, in order that all might live fully into their call to discipleship and service, neither sexual orientation nor gender identity will disqualify anyone from full participation in the life of Boston Square Church, including participation in the sacraments of baptism and communion, marriage, service as minister, elder, or deacon, and any leadership role as their gifts allow.
All are welcome here. Let us follow Jesus together.
